Don't share your traveling plans with strangers. As tempting as it may be to gush about your fun traveling plans to visit family in Europe with the bank teller, resist the urge. You never know if the person behind you is looking for some easy money.
When you leave make sure your spare key is not in an easy to find spot. If you can quickly find it, so can a thief. Instead, leave the spare key with your house sitter or a trusted neighbor for any emergencies.
Be careful with your answering machine message. You shouldn't leave a message explaining that you are away for the holiday. Instead, leave the traveling plans out of it and simply leave a festive greeting wishing the caller a happy holiday.
Call up your alarm company to let them know that you will be traveling out of town. Let them know how long you will be gone and when you are planning to return. It's also a good time to give them your contact information so they can reach you in case they need to.
Stay away from the classifieds. Never advertise your intentions of finding a house sitter through advertisements. A better idea would be to find a family member or friend to house sit, or contact a professional house-sitting service.
When you find a house sitter keep them updated. Use your camera to take quick pictures of dog walkers, garden crewmembers, and anyone else who will be frequenting your home. Share these pictures with your house sitter with their information so they know whom to expect while you are away.
Don't forget the normal details that are helpful to keep your home looking lived in. Set your Christmas lights on a timer so they continue to go off during the night. Ask a neighbor or friend to pickup your papers and mail, and arrange for someone to mow your lawn.
